NUTN Ranks 2nd Nationally for Excellence in University Social Responsibility in 2026
NUTN News

National University of Tainan (NUTN) has been ranked second among medium-sized public universities in the 2026 CommonWealth Excellence In University Responsibility Awards, which evaluate institutions on governance, teaching, social engagement, and environmental sustainability — recognizing concrete contributions to sustainable development beyond traditional academic metrics.

NUTN has embedded sustainability and USR—university social responsibility—into its core institutional framework. The Office of Social Responsibility coordinates cross-unit collaboration to integrate teaching, research, and administration, supported by plural faculty development systems and promoting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects. Meanwhile, sustainability-related courses have expanded to over 1,900 offerings with more than 60,000 enrollments in Academic Year 2025.

The university has developed diverse community engagement models — including initiatives in rural education, assistive learning, and intergenerational collaboration — and uses a USR-Hub mechanism to connect practice sites with local schools, social welfare organizations, and communities.

A flagship initiative, centered on modular assistive technologies for children and students with disabilities, has partnered with over 50 institutions across education, social welfare, and healthcare sectors. Led by Professor Chien-Yu Lin (林千玉) from the Department of Special Education, this project has expanded to over 40 sites, trained more than 4,000 participants, and supported over 1,800 students with special needs.

NUTN also applies sustainability principles to research and practical application. Prominent examples include the projects to recycle materials from decommissioned photovoltaic solar panels for low-carbon construction and to promote battery recycling through international collaboration with industry partners in Taiwan and Malaysia. On campus, energy consumption and carbon emissions have declined steadily through LED upgrades, high-efficiency air conditioning, smart energy management, and green procurement — achieving a 100% green procurement rate in 2025.

NUTN affirmed its commitment to deepening local and international engagement as it continues to demonstrate the university's role and value in contemporary society.
