NUTN News

The National University of Tainan (NUTN) has gained international recognition through the work of faculty member Chien-Yu Huang from its Department of Music. His album White Clouds & Grey Dogs: Echoes in Flux, released globally by Navona Records under PARMA Recordings, has been named a Gold Medal Winner at the Global Music Awards — a recognition of his distinguished work in contemporary composition.

The album is inspired by Eastern imagery and incorporates contemporary compositional language. Through refined instrumental arrangements, it presents the movement and transformation of sound across time and space. The judging panel commended the album for bridging Eastern aesthetics and Western contemporary classical music, praising its exceptional artistic depth.

In addition to composing the album, Chien-Yu Huang collaborated with fellow NUTN faculty members in the recording process. Performers include Keng-Ming Tsai (violin), Hui-Yi Lee (French horn), Mei-Na Yang (piano), and Ting-Wei Chen (cello). The album features works such as Tainan 400 and Paradise: Gold Coast, performed in different ensemble settings, demonstrating the department's strength in integrating composition and performance.

This recognition reflects the Department of Music's sustained excellence in both pedagogy and creative practice. The collaboration with Navona Records has enabled the album to enter the international distribution network, expanding NUTN's presence in the field of contemporary music. The release also brings original Taiwanese compositions to a global audience, while offering students a concrete reference for professional artistic production.

White Clouds & Grey Dogs: Echoes in Flux is currently available on major digital platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify, as well as in physical formats.
